Free Open Source Laptop Antitheft Software for Your Mac

That’s a mouthful.

I haven’t tried it yet, but I just came across a link to an interesting software project called Prey. It’s designed to help you recover your laptop in the unfortunate event of theft.

I wrote an article waaaaay back in 2007 about two commercial apps that perform a similar function. If you use Prey, please post a comment and let us know what you think of it.

I tried this out, but had a really hard time installing it. I purchased a different commercial product than the ones you listed, it was easier to install had tech support ( in English) and they assist with the recovery when it actually goes missing. It also had a cool feature that actually got the exact location of the device using wi-fi positioning.

Garett, what one are you using? I’m looking to get one before the fall and am leaning toward undercover.

i’ve been following the Prey project for a while now, and must say i’m impressed with the way the project has evolved. installing is now a breeze, no more api and device keys to copy and paste. they also have a android version!
