Fall Already? Where’d My Summer Go?

Fall classes start at Santa Clara tomorrow. Technically, they started on Saturday, but I’m not taking any weekend seminars. As I look out the window, the sky is a brilliant blue, unmarred by even a single cloud. The breeze is warm, and the beaches here in Santa Cruz are still teeming with tourists.

Yet the school calendar tells me tomorrow fall begins. I’ve already done a substantial amount of reading for my Monday classes, as all but one of the professors has given us an initial assignment. So for a few more hours, I’ll exist in that limbo between summer and fall. Frankly, it’s a bit unnerving. Let’s get on with it already. Perhaps this is how every 3L feels. The novelty of law school has worn off. The anxiety of the first year is gone. The overworked second year is behind us. Now all that remains is the test of willpower known as the third year.

We’re fortunate to have a solid contingent of Mac Law Students readers from Australia and New Zealand. You Southern Hemisphere folks are, if my research is correct, already well into your July Semester. In fact, you’re a full semester ahead of us Northern Hemisphere folks, which means you’ll graduate in November, just as we begin preparing for our mid-year finals. I’m a bit resentful of that. Not bitter, mind you. Just a bit resentful. But I promise I won’t hold it against you.

Regardless of where you’re sitting as you read this, I wish you a successful and (dare I say it) fun semester.
