Buying Windows XP for Boot Camp Use

Boot Camp is excellent, but it still requires that you purchase a copy of Windows XP if you don’t already have a licensed copy sitting around doing nothing. MLS reader Brian Israel told me he purchased an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) copy of Windows XP Pro online for $139 at Newegg. According to Brian, there is no student pricing for XP Pro, so this represented a savings of $150 over the standard version of XP Pro. He had no problem buying or installing the OEM version.

Have any other readers tried this approach? Since *sniff* I don’t have a MacBook of my own, I have to rely on reports from all of you lucky folks.

After seeing the nightmare that is Vista, I’ll be switching to this scenario (BootCamp Dual Boot) as soon as I need new hardware. No way am I or my business going to survive using the latest OS from Redmond.

Hi Spence! Do the MacPro boxes have enough expandability for your needs? Or would you be going the laptop route, and using your existing tower machines for 3d work?

I wonder how many XP users will switch when they think about the costs of upgrading to Vista versus the costs of simply jumping ship to OS X while keeping XP in reserve under Boot Camp.
